Question 1

How compact is the Sony A7R VI?

Accepted Answer

The Sony A7R VI measures approximately 132.7 x 96.9 x 82.9mm and weighs around 622g body-only, keeping it close in size to the previous A7R generation despite the faster stacked sensor, upgraded processing hardware, and revised power system. The deeper grip and illuminated controls improve handling without pushing the body into the larger flagship form factor, so it still balances comfortably with compact primes and standard zooms for handheld shooting.

Question 2

How does the Sony A7R VI capture, process, and compress RAW files?

Accepted Answer

The A7R VI captures full-resolution RAW images and supports both Lossless Compressed and Compressed (HQ) formats, balancing file size and image quality. The camera also includes processing tools such as Composite RAW shooting for increased resolution, multi-frame noise reduction for cleaner low-light results, and HDR capture for expanded dynamic range. Extended RAW processing through Imaging Edge Desktop provides further control during post-production.

Question 3

Does the Sony A7R VI support 32-bit float audio?

Accepted Answer

Yes, when used with Sony’s new XLR adapter. The A7R VI does not record 32-bit float audio internally, but pairing it with the adapter enables 32-bit float, 96 kHz, 4-channel recording using dual A/D converters, allowing greater flexibility when adjusting audio levels during editing.

Question 4

Does the Sony A7R VI have any built-in creative looks?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The A7R VI includes Sony’s Creative Look system, with profiles such as Standard, Portrait, Neutral, and Vivid, as well as monochrome options. It also adds new Film-style looks, FL2 and FL3, which extend the existing FL profile with different colour and contrast responses. You can preview these looks live to set a consistent look in-camera rather than applying later.

Question 5

Does the Sony A7R VI crop when recording video?

Accepted Answer

Yes. 8K recording applies an approximate 1.2x crop. In Super 35mm, 4K 60p and 30p maintain a 1.0x crop, while 4K 120p applies a 1.4x crop. In full-frame 4K, turning off angle-of-view priority results in an approximate 1.1x crop. These changes affect the angle of view across recording modes, so framing and lens choice may need to be adjusted when switching between resolutions and frame rates.

Question 6

How does the Sony A7R VI control heat during video recording?

Accepted Answer

The A7R VI uses a redesigned internal heat dissipation system with a graphite structure to manage temperature during high-resolution recording. This design maintains stable operation when recording formats such as 8K, reducing the likelihood of interruptions during longer takes. Actual recording time depends on settings and ambient temperature.

Question 7

Can I use Dual Gain for video recording?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Dual Gain video uses two sensor readouts, optimised for highlights and shadows, to improve shadow detail and reduce noise in darker areas of the frame. This provides more usable tonal information when grading. However, it operates within specific ISO ranges and is limited to recording modes up to 30fps.
